The Lovers’ Park Landscaping and Design
Project is an initiative undertaken by the Boghossian Foundation in collaboration with the Armenia Fund. The project
is not merely a reconstruction initiative; it is a renovation project which also
insures the sustainable maintenance of the park.
Japanese traditional landscaping has
been a major source of inspiration for the Lover’s Park Landscaping and Design
Project.
The design for the reconstruction of
the new Lovers’ Park has been created by Pierre Rambach, a well known landscape architect based in Swizerland and
the author of many books and articles on Japanese and Eastern gardens.
Lovers’ Park, on the intersection of
one of the main streets of Yerevan, Marshal Baghramian Avenue with Demirjian
Street, adjacent to some of the capital’s most important administrative
structures and Marshal Baghramian metro station, is a small haven of nature,
which has sadly been neglected.
Following a year of research, in
2006 Pierre Rambach presented the sketches of the new
Lovers’ Park project. That same year the project received Yerevan City Hall’s
approval.
Lovers’ Park covers an area of 1.6 hectares
(16’419 square meter / 176’732 square feet). According to the plan there will
be an artificial lake with two islands on the eastern side of the park. One of
the islands will serve as a stage for the 200-seat amphitheater opposite the
lake. There will be a further 200 seats in the area adjacent to the stage.
It is envisaged to have two
waterfalls, which will cascade into rivulets flowing into the large lake. A
decorative dry river bed, originating in the south-east of the park will end at
the lake. Taking into consideration the custom of children wading in the city’s
public pools during the summer months, Lovers’ Park will offer a small pool
near a playground.
The park will also have a small café
with a few outdoor seats, special shaded spots for those who enjoy playing
backgammon and chess. The park has been designed with the needs of physically
challenged people in mind. The park will have a public toilet, which will
include a special cubicle for wheelchairs. There will be no steps in the park,
which will enable the easy access of wheelchairs to all parts.
The best lighting specialists have
worked on the park. As well as general lighting throughout the park, there will
be decorative lighting to highlight stone compositions and sculptures.
The main paths in the park will be
tiled with natural stones. The secondary, less important paths will be covered
in sand especially for those who enjoy jogging and exercising in the mornings
or evenings.
The park will be irrigated both
manually and automatically. The modern computerized automatic irrigation system
will be self-regulating having a special program which determines the amount of
water needed in different segments of the park, taking into consideration
weather conditions such as humidity and rainfall.
The project also foresees the future management of the park, in order to develop and perfect the concepts and resources invested. The park should become an exemplary model of public leisure areas in our city where people will be able to fully relax and enjoy some peace and it should serve as a reference for the revitalization of other parks.
